The Malaria Research and Development Alliance

About the Alliance

In March 2004, leaders and representatives of 15 organizations conducting malaria research and product development met to explore the potential need for and feasibility of creating a coordinated effort to increase global support for malaria R&D. Against a canvas streaked with a rainbow of initiatives addressing various aspects of malaria research and product development, the participants agreed that there was a compelling need to demonstrate how the activities of each initiative fit together in the big picture of malaria R&D, to illustrate clearly why R&D is essential in the global fight against malaria, and to unify and clarify advocacy messages with the aim of increasing funding for malaria R&D.

This meeting gave birth to the Malaria R&D Alliance, a group of malaria R&D organizations jointly advocating for global commitment for increased and sustained resources for malaria R&D.

The Mission

The Malaria R&D Alliance seeks to raise awareness about the important role of malaria R&D in the malaria continuum and to develop a shared responsibility and increase resources for malaria R&D. To accomplish this mission, the alliance works to:

  • Clarify and highlight the role of malaria R&D among priority stakeholders;
  • Generate information useful in making the case for investment in malaria R&D;
  • Create and disseminate coordinated messages about the role of R&D in defeating malaria;
  • Increase public support for malaria R&D; and
  • Increase investment in malaria R&D.
